A Most Versatile Breed
What is it about the cane corso breed that sets them far apart from all other breeds? Is it the powerful and dominating look they exhibit? Is it the instinctual protective nature that is easy to see in a correctly well bred corso? Or is it the undying loyalty they have to their family unit? Which of these is most accurate and representative of the breed? How do you know if a Cane Corso is bred properly enough to meet the requirements they were originally held to?
The truth is that it's all of these things and more; so much more.
A corso that is carefully bred to embody the corsi of old should stand out above all others with a combination of traits that other breeds don't have, and even some corsi, simply don't have. They should be a specimen to behold, regardless of what they are doing or the environment they are in. With this breed, the words high quality should mean more than just something that looks nice. When a high quality Cane Corso is present, there should be no question or doubt that it holds the perfect balance of power, confidence, dominance and athleticism, while at the same time, exuding an equal balance of stability, grace and composure.
The Cane Corso is meant to be a protector, a guardian. They are not meant to be a soft, weak dog with little or no confidence and fortitude. They should be willing and able to stand rock steady in the path of whatever danger or harm may be seeking out their family, and destroy whatever that threat may be. At the same time, they should be indifferent at the least, even respectful and friendly, to strangers who are obviously no threat. A properly bred corso should have the ability to adapt and switch effortlessly between the ultimate protector and the gentle soul.
While a corso is indeed a member of the mastiff group, they should be built in a manner that might create doubt that it's the group they should belong to. A corso should be athletic and agile, and have the ability to move effortlessly and fluidly, in contrast to the other mastiff breeds. They should be lean and fit, and able to travel easily with speed, covering distance with little effort.
Finally, this is a breed that should exhibit a level of dedication and loyalty to their family, even to a fault. The love and admiration that a corso has for their people should be easily seen by any and all visitors. It should be noticeable without doubt that the corso will release and use whatever fury it holds inside in the defense of its family because of the undying and unshakeable love it holds for them.
